Coupled Inductor Flyback Transformers

A flyback transformer operates as a coupled inductor rather than a conventional transformer. During the switch on-time, energy is stored in the magnetic field of the gapped core; when the switch turns off, that energy is transferred to the secondary winding and delivered to the load. This single magnetic component combines energy storage, isolation and voltage step-up or step-down in one package, making it the workhorse of low-to-medium power isolated converters.

AC-DC Adapter Transformers
