Ceramic Capacitor Types and Variants

Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitors (MLCC)

MLCCs are the most widely used ceramic capacitor, built from alternating layers of ceramic dielectric and metal electrodes to deliver high capacitance in a compact package. Available in SMD chip sizes from 01005 up to 2220 and larger, MLCCs are the standard choice for decoupling, bypass and filtering in smartphones, power supplies, automotive electronics and industrial controls. Ceramic Disc Capacitors

Ceramic disc capacitors consist of a single disc of ceramic material with radial leads for through-hole mounting. Ceramic disc capacitors are commonly used in safety-certified AC line filtering, general-purpose coupling and legacy through-hole designs where a leaded component is required, including X-capacitor and Y-capacitor safety functions in mains filtering.

Class 1 Dielectric - C0G / NP0

C0G, also known as NP0, is a class 1 dielectric offering near-zero temperature drift and negligible capacitance change with applied voltage. It is the most stable ceramic dielectric and is preferred for timing, tuning, oscillator, filter and precision analog circuits where accuracy and repeatability are critical.

Class 2 Dielectric - X7R and X5R

X7R and X5R are class 2 dielectrics that provide higher capacitance per unit volume at the cost of wider tolerance and greater voltage dependence. X7R is stable from -55C to +125C, while X5R covers -55C to +85C. These are the workhorse dielectrics for decoupling, bulk bypass and filtering in digital, power and general-purpose circuits, offering the best cost-to-capacitance ratio for volume production.

High-Voltage Ceramic Capacitors

High-voltage ceramic capacitors are rated from hundreds to thousands of volts and are used in power supplies, inverters, snubber circuits, lighting ballasts and industrial equipment. They are available in both MLCC and disc formats, typically in X7R and C0G dielectrics, and offer excellent stability under high-voltage stress. Their compact high-voltage ratings make them ideal for space-constrained power designs such as EV chargers and server power supplies.
