Temperature Sensors: Thermocouples, RTDs, Thermistors and Digital ICs
Temperature sensors are among the most widely deployed sensing elements across industrial automation, consumer electronics, automotive systems, HVAC, medical devices and IoT infrastructure. Selecting the right temperature sensor requires understanding the trade-offs between accuracy, operating range, response time, cost and interface complexity. At ADD Components, we source a broad portfolio of temperature sensing solutions from leading manufacturers including Texas Instruments, Honeywell, Maxim Integrated, Analog Devices and Microchip, helping procurement teams and design engineers secure the parts they need with competitive lead times.
Product Types / Variants
Thermocouples (Type K, J, T)
Thermocouples generate a microvolt-level Seebeck voltage proportional to the temperature difference between two dissimilar metal junctions. Type K (chromel-alumel) is the most common general-purpose thermocouple, covering -200 degrees C to +1250 degrees C with good corrosion resistance. Type J (iron-constantan) offers a narrower range but higher sensitivity at lower temperatures, while Type T (copper-constantan) provides excellent stability for cryogenic and sub-zero measurements. Thermocouples require cold-junction compensation and specialised interface ICs such as the MAX31855 or AD8495 to digitise their output. They are favoured in furnaces, kilns, engine exhaust monitoring and high-temperature process control where RTDs and thermistors cannot survive.
RTDs (Pt100, Pt1000)
Resistance Temperature Detectors rely on the predictable change in electrical resistance of pure platinum with temperature. The Pt100 (100 ohms at 0 degrees C) and Pt1000 (1000 ohms at 0 degrees C) are industry-standard RTD elements offering exceptional linearity and long-term stability. Pt100 sensors are commonly used in 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire configurations, with 4-wire Kelvin connections delivering the highest accuracy by eliminating lead resistance errors. RTDs dominate precision laboratory instrumentation, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing and HVAC building management systems where accuracy within plus or minus 0.1 degrees C is required over a moderate -50 degrees C to +500 degrees C range.
Thermistors (NTC, PTC)
Thermistors are semiconductor-based temperature sensors with a steep, non-linear resistance-versus-temperature curve. NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) thermistors decrease in resistance as temperature rises and deliver high sensitivity over limited temperature spans, making them ideal for battery pack protection, motor winding monitoring, 3D printer heated beds and medical thermometry. PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) thermistors increase resistance with temperature and serve as resettable fuses and overcurrent protection devices. Glass-encapsulated NTC thermistors from Honeywell and Vishay offer reliable performance up to 300 degrees C in harsh environments.
Digital Temperature Sensor ICs
Digital temperature sensors integrate sensing element, analogue-to-digital converter and communication interface on a single silicon die, outputting calibrated temperature data over I2C, SPI or 1-Wire buses. The DS18B20 from Maxim Integrated provides 9-to-12-bit resolution over a 1-Wire interface with a unique 64-bit ROM address, allowing multiple sensors to share a single microcontroller pin. The MCP9808 from Microchip offers plus or minus 0.25 degrees C typical accuracy over I2C. The ADT7420 from Analog Devices delivers plus or minus 0.2 degrees C accuracy with 16-bit resolution over I2C. Analog output ICs like the LM35 (linear 10 mV per degree C) and TMP36 (low-voltage, calibrated in degrees C) remain popular for simple analogue-to-digital conversion without digital bus overhead. These ICs are widely adopted in IoT sensor nodes, server room monitoring, cold chain logistics and consumer wearables.
Key Selection Parameters
Temperature range: Match the sensor's operating limits to the application environment, from cryogenic to high-temperature.
Accuracy and resolution: Consider both absolute accuracy (plus or minus degrees C) and resolution (bits or smallest detectable change).
Response time: Thermally massive probes respond slowly; bare thermocouple junctions and chip-scale ICs react in milliseconds.
Output interface: Choose between analogue voltage (LM35, TMP36), digital bus (I2C, SPI, 1-Wire), or resistance output (RTD, thermistor).
Environmental sealing: Ingress Protection (IP) rating matters for outdoor, washdown and immersion applications.
Self-heating: RTDs and thermistors dissipate power; minimise excitation current in low-power and high-accuracy designs.
Long-term drift: RTDs offer the best stability; thermistors may drift more over years of thermal cycling.
